Kurzfassung:
A Portuguese spin-off company developed silica based antimicrobial nanoparticles that can be used, when applied in different fibers, as an alternative to antibiotics. The particles can contain peroxides or be coated with silver. The developed nanoparticles can be used in the health sector to replace the usage of allergic substances in medical textiles like hospital sheets. The company is looking for health related companies for a technical cooperation agreement.
Beschreibung:
Nanoparticles have been in the last few years used in different types of applications like health, electronics and energy among others.
The developed nanoparticles are silica based and can be used in a solid form, as an emulsion, or incorporated in a variety of substrates. The production of these high-efficient nanoparticles is based on ecology friendly methods and non-toxicological substances.
The company developed two types of antimicrobial nanoparticles:
A) Nanoparticles containing peroxides: They are non-toxical and can be an alternative to common antibiotics. The particles can be released into the washing machine at low temperatures without the need for the activation of the peroxide and have a good washfastness.
B) Silica nanoparticles coated with silver: They are an alternative to antibiotics and silver particles based on an innovative process to trap the silver into the silica nanopartciles. They aren´t toxic and they don´t penetrate the skin as its size is above 200nm. They have a good washfastness and can be applied in wool and cellulosic fibres.
