Beschreibung: A Scottish hi-tech system and silicon chip design consultancy with a proven track record in digital imaging and signal processing is developing an acoustic fall and wellbeing detector which does not need to be worn.
Intended for use in the healthcare sector and with particular emphasis on assisted living for the elderly, the core technology offers an unintrusive, low cost and easy to use alternative to cameras, MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) based or other traditionally worn devices.
The sensor technology can identify falls and be used in products which alert carers, friends or family or send an alarm to a call centre. It can also sense footfall and can raise the alarm if an abnormal pattern occurs, such as footfall at night or no footfall.
The product could be part of a system for domestic use, with sensors in as many rooms as required, or for use in care homes with sensors in individual rooms and a base station worn on a belt by staff.
Innovative Aspects: The product uses innovative signal processing technology.
Acoustic information is gathered from specific parts of the audio spectrum which are unaffected by day to day sounds and the acoustic data is processed remotely by the sensors and relevant data sent wirelessly to a remote hub.
The product has significant advantages over current solutions:
Pendants have to be worn and activated by the user and rely on batteries. MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) / accelerometers can mistake sudden movements such as sitting for a fall and again need to be worn and are battery dependant. Camera based techniques have difficulties such as the handling of ambient light as well as privacy issues.
Falls are a leading cause of death and injury for people over 75 years old and the estimated direct healthcare cost associated with falls in the UK is £15m. The product is low cost and has the potential to improve wellbeing as well as reduce the cost of monitoring individuals and treating injury and illness caused by falls.
