Kurzfassung:
A Brussels-based SME has developed and patented a range of modular and customizable green roofs that can be mass-produced. This technology is able to yield a whole range of products from low cost to luxury concepts. The SME looks for partners in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, France and Germany for joint projects and offers licenses to partners for all European countries but the above mentioned countries.

Beschreibung:
A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and soil, or a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane.

Green roofs are usually flat roofs or roofs with a moderate slope. There are two types of green roofs: intensive roofs, which are thicker and can support a wider variety of plants but are heavier and require more maintenance, and extensive roofs, which are covered in a light layer of vegetation and are lighter than an intensive green roof.

Also known as ?living roofs,? green roofs offer several technical and aesthetic advantages:

? They decrease and regulate rain water runoff, as part of the water is used by the plants, another part is gradually released back into the atmosphere by evaporation, and finally the last part of the collected rainwater is released into the sewage system with a time-lag that can help reduce overflow or flooding risks.

? They filter pollutants and carbon dioxide out of the air, as well as pollutants and heavy metals out of rainwater.

? They reduce heating (by adding mass and thermal resistance value) and cooling (by evaporative cooling) loads on a building. Traditional building materials soak up the sun's radiation and re-emit it as heat, making cities at least 4 degrees Celsius (7 °F) hotter than surrounding areas. A concentration of green roofs in an urban area can even reduce the city's average temperatures during the summer.

? The soil and plants on green roofs help to insulate a building for sound: the soil helps to block lower frequencies and the plants block higher frequencies. ? They increase wildlife habitat in built-up areas by providing habitats for plants, insects, and animals that otherwise have limited natural space in cities. Rooftop greenery complements wild areas by providing "stepping stones" for songbirds, migratory birds and other wildlife facing shortages of natural habitat.

? They may increase roof life span by two or three times as the structure of the green roof protects the components of the roof itself.

Despite these numerous advantages, architects and real estate companies are still reluctant to promote existing green roofs (?built in place?) as a universal solution. This situation most probably results from the fact that none of the solutions currently available on the market is standardized, which usually implies a lot of labour and manpower to install or retrofit the green roof on site.

This Brussels-based SME has developed and patented a range of standardized pre-assembled green roofs (?ready to place?) that are modular and customizable according to client?s needs.

The offered technology takes into account in a balanced way the following parameters in order to achieve the optimal technical and aesthetic performance: ? Climate, especially temperature and rainfall patterns. ? Strength of the supporting structure. ? Size, slope, height, and directional orientation of the roof. ? Type of underlying waterproofing.? Drainage elements, such as drains, scuppers, and drainage conduits.? Accessibility and intended use. ? Visibility, compatibility with surrounding existing architectural elements, and owner's aesthetic preferences.? Compatibility with other "green" systems, such as solar panels, heat exchangers, etc.. All existing on-site cables, pipes, are easily accommodated.? Costs of materials and labor.

The SME looks for partners in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, France and Germany for joint projects and offers licenses to partners for all European countries but the above mentioned countries.

Innovative Aspects:
-The technology is based on the ?domino? principle, with a design based on "interchangeable and auto connection" properties.
-The technology uses light weight structural elements that are prefabricated and pre-assembled before on-site setting up. These ?ready to place? elements are easily and quickly assembled together. The green roofs are consequently customizable according to customer?s needs, and the on-site setting up is less weather dependent. Upgrade and maintenance are as easy as ever.
-The technology is compatible with the softwares usually used by architects for conception drawings, budgeting and rendering purposes (such as Autocad, Sketchup?).
-The product is 100 % compatible with all existing and future roof equipments such as solar panels, automatic watering, roof terraced garden solutions.
-This technology is suitable both for new buildings as well as for retrofitting to existing buildings. The technology can be applied to industrial facilities, office buildings and private houses or constructions.
-This technology is environmentally friendly thanks to its modular features that facilitate re-use and recycling.
-Last but not least, this technology is cheaper than existing green roofs solutions (built in place systems) thanks to the scale economies resulting, among others, from the pre-assembled modular structure.
